ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF AFRICA REGIONAL COMMITTEE (ARC) OF INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF DEPOSIT INSURERS (IADI) HELD ON 29TH TO 31ST JULY, 2010 IN ARUSHA, TANZANIA

The 2010 Annual Conference of IADI Africa Regional Committee was hosted by the Tanzania Deposit Insurance Board between 29th and 31st, July. The theme of this year’s conference was “The Benefits of Deposit Insurance in Africa”. Participants were drawn from member countries of IADI worldwide as well as non-members with one form of deposit insurance system or the other and countries wishing to establish a DIS especially from Africa. In the last category were countries like Ghana, Lesotho, Zambia, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Mauritius, and South Africa amongst others.

The theme of this year’s conference reflected the increasing global acknowledgement of the critical role that deposit insurance systems play in promoting financial stability. In the main, the key objectives of the conference were to provide a forum for participants to share views on elevating the role and benefits of DIS in Africa and to help build capacity among personnel in the existing DIS in Africa and those intending to establish new ones.

In keeping with this theme, the conference looked at the benefits of deposit insurance in the context of various country experiences. Countries experiences presented included Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Taiwan, Malaysia, Korea and United States of America. The research report on the comparative analysis of DIS in Africa was also presented.  It was expected that experiences shared as well as the discussions and comments from various participants would enable member countries to revise and develop their systems and to improve their operations in a way that is consistent with best practices.

Nine participants attended the conference from Nigeria. These included the former Managing Director/CEO of the Corporation who attended on the invitation of IADI, the Acting Managing Director/CEO of the Corporation, Umaru Ibrahim, mni, six members of staff of the Corporation and one official of the Ministry of Finance. The Nigerian case study was presented by the Acting Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer.
